Sad Day In Norman
Well, where do I begin? Actually I'm not going to go into much detail but let's just say that it was a sad day if you're a Sooner fan as we lost to the mighty Horned Frogs of TCU today, 17-10. In Norman, no less. Chuck Long called a great game though. I don't think TCU ever really got a bead on the 4 plays we ran over-and-over. At least not until the middle of the 2nd quarter. I'm also proud the that University was kind enough to raise ticket prices this year so that I could pay more to see such a great game today. Paul Thompson showed what all Sooner fans have been waiting for as well by occasionally getting a pass close to a Sooner receiver. His fumble and interception were nice too. It's a great start to the season. This harkens back to the great season of 1996 as we were able to pull off the same feat. Coincidentally we play Tulsa next week and we also lost to them in 96 also, so maybe we can accomplish that one too.
Hopefully the coaching staff can get things corrected. It's not like I haven't talked about this countless times before, but I'm just sick of Chuck's offense. It's even worse now because he doesn't have Mark Clayton, Mark Bradley, Jason White, et al to make him look good. He really laid an egg today. He never even tried to mix things up and put us in a position to be successful when it was obvious we were struggling. I guess he just figured we would eventually pull it out because our jerseys say "Sooners" on the front. Who knows? In any case, if we don't get something figured out fast, it's going to be a LONG year.... (no pun intended)

Matt,
The mourning is world-wide. If not for the actual crisis in the south, I would think that their would be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Keep the faith; don't dispair. Sooners will prevail!
Boomer Sooner!
Dude, don't be so downtrodden! Have a little faith in your beloved Sooners, they surely won't let you down! It was a rough start to the season, but they'll pull it out for you next weekend! Maybe they heard you were leaving the country for a couple of weeks and were afraid their die hard fan would miss a game?
love ya, Frau
Matt, gimme a break...have a little faith in this team! Even me, a Tech fan, knows that a team can come through for you! Especially when it's a team that's been so good for so long. I can't believe I just said that but it's true!

I feel your pain. Cunning, deceit, and the element of surprise may not be any of Chuck's strong points, but really are these characteristics that important when coaching football? That said there is plenty of blame to go around to people besides Mr. Long.
The game should have been the equilvent of a scrimiage of the 1st team vs. the 3rd team. Apparantly TCU realized that this wasn't an actual scrimage and played accordingly. Nobody got the message to the Sooners.
Nevertheless it was the 1st game of the year. It can still be a successful season.
JD - Agreed. I'm not giving up hope and I also agree there is more blame to go around than just on Chuck. I guess I should go into more detail than just my main frustration. Thompson sucks and the OL is awful. That's why we need some creativity in the play calling to take advantage of what we can be successful doing rather than just trying to stick with the plays that aren't working. I think the defense will improve and hopefully the offense will as well. We obviously are in dire need of leadership and hopefully someone will step up. I don't mean to act like it is all the fault of just Chuck, it's just that Chuck has had this problem since he's been the OC, it's just that he's had players to bail him out until this game (of course the OB and SB the last 2 years they didn't either.) He's a great QB coach, just doesn't seem to have the knack for being a great play caller. I'm not giving up on the season by any means, it's just extra frustrating since I've thought about the play-calling issues for several years....
I was being sarcastic with my first point. You're right. Play action constitutes a trick play for Chuck. The OL is the biggest problem towards winning I think. Because you can win with the ram-it-down your-throat if you've got the hogs up front. It was apparent that we've not got that right now. Which makes your point more valid regarding creativity IMHO.
I just have to remind myself that we've been spoiled for the last 6 seasons.
Umm....I guess you have my sympathies?
(Don't know just what are appropriate condolences for such trauma as this.)
;O)
