Bananas

Is it bad to put bananas in the refrigerator?

You can put bananas in the fridge, but the skins turn black. The inside is still good. What is more amazing to me is that you actually BOUGHT bananas to go in the fridge. That must be a first. Love you, Mom

....after some time cleaning my tiny kitchen, and thinking about your deep question--I decided that after all these years of knowing you :-) I still take you too seriously. I should have said, "In theory, bananas in the fridge will turn brown, but the inside is still edible. Of course, I know your habits too well to even contemplate that you actually are experimenting with a bunch of bananas in your own fridge, since that would entail a trip to the grocery store!" Or maybe becoming a home owner and having your OWN fridge has caused you to turn over a new leaf. Hope springs eternal. Still love you, Mom

I put mine in the fridge pretty often because it reduces the number of trips to the store. I tend to like the taste of them cold anyway... or frozen - a nice alternative occasionally.

First off, I think it's terrible my own mother would think I'm incapable of grocery shopping and secondly they definitely did turn brown plus they froze my teeth when I tried to eat one. I've actually come a long way from eating out every meal. In fact, last week I ate at least one meal a day at home!!!

Sorry, Matt, I guess I will have to get accustomed to the new "serious" you. Also I will have to adjust to you actually having food and eating at home. Way to go!!!! Mom

You haven't written a post in nearly two months and THIS is your first entry?
You gotta be kiddin' me...
I was expecting something like "Sorry I'm a loser for not writing in my blog, but I was out saving the world James Bond style, plus I cleaned my house and learned how to bake bread"

And speaking of bread, I just leave mine out on the counter and If I don't eat them in time then I put'em in the freezer until such time as I have opportunity to make banana bread (or in your case, give them to someone who CAN make banana bread).

When I said "I leave mine out on the counter" I was referring to my bananas of course :)

Ok, that was some serious inspiration there Matt! Hehe, not making fun of you of course....lez

Dear Serious Matt,

As the Helpful Commentors above stated, bananas will turn black yet remain edible if placed in the fridge. I, for one, prefer them that way, though you and your teeth apparently don't. I would suggest purchasing only a few bananas at a time and NOT placing them in the fridge, so as to have enough time to eat the entire quantity of purchased, unrefrigerated bananas before they go bad.

Yours, wondering if the same thoughts would apply to pineapple,

Gee....I wonder who THAT could be?

Wow, who knew a little question about fruit could generate such great converstaion. Nice to know my thoughts are missed. I'll try to gather some inspiration and write a 'real' post later....

I haven't made the rounds in a while so I am just now getting to respond on the banana issue. In your case, I think you are better off buying them really, really green so by the time you get around to eating them they will be ripe and not rotten. Plus you need to buy one of those really cool banana hangers.

Do those banana hangers actually work? I mean, do they REALLY keep them from ripening quicker? How does sitting on the counter make any difference?

Mgam said...

I think I need a maid to buy them and keep them from turning black.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, that makes sense and then a chef to dust and vacuum for you!

Ohhh. Great idea. Any volunteers?

I'm trying to hold off for the time being but thanks Lindsy...

I don't think "taking care of bananas" is found in the usual maid's job description. Good luck with that one. Neither does it necessarily fall under a wife's job description either. I should hate to think you'd get married simply to keep your bananas from going bad...but, each to his own...true love comes in ALL different forms........

Mgam said...

Rather than having a wife who would take care of bananas I think I would prefer a wife who smelled like bananas. If you have any ideas please let me know!

Hey, Matt, I think you've had just about as many comments about bananas as you're going to get. I think it's time you write about a REAL topic! Still love you, Mom

Karen said...

I don't know "Mom." These bananas sure bring them in. I'm still waiting on a picture of the house.

Hey, maybe Lindsy still has connections at Bath & Body Works and she could request they come out with banana scented lotion. A banana scented wife is a possibility. =)

Mgam said...

Never underestimate the power of bananas mom. They just have a way of bringing people together. Why do you think there is a such thing as fruit salad? It's b/c all the other fruit wants to be near the bananas of course!

That's a great idea Stacey, maybe Lindsy can get something together since she already smells like mangos anyway.

Karen, pictures are coming eventually. I'm just a procratinator.

Hey Matt,

If you're still looking for someone to take care of bananas for you, I suggest you check the Classifieds for a banananny.

Sincerely, and wondering where this "fruity" conversation is going to lead next,

Court

That's too bad as I really wanted a natural smell rather than an artificial scent. Good try though--I'll stay single....
